Makes: 10–12 patties
Prep: 25 minutes
Cook: 20–25 minutes
Ingredients
- 450 g (1 lb) ground beef
- 500 g (1.1 lb) potatoes, peeled and boiled
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 egg
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp onion powder
- ½ tsp dried oregano
- 1 cup (100 g) shredded cheddar cheese
- ½ cup (50 g) grated Parmesan
- 2 tbsp oil
Method
- Cook the potatoes: Boil until very tender. Drain well and mash. Let cool for a few minutes.
- Cook the beef: Brown the ground beef and onion in a skillet. Add garlic and cook for another minute. Drain excess fat and cool slightly.
- Make the mixture: Combine mashed potatoes, beef mixture, egg, breadcrumbs, salt, pepper, paprika, onion powder and oregano. Mix until well combined.
- Shape: Form into thick rounds about 2–3 cm (¾–1 inch) thick.
- Add the cheese: Mix the cheddar and Parmesan. Press a generous layer onto the top of each patty.
- Bake: Place on a parchment-lined baking sheet. Brush or drizzle lightly with oil. Bake at 220°C / 425°F for 18–22 minutes, until the patties are cooked through and the cheese is deeply golden and crisp.
- Extra-crispy finish: Switch to the broiler/grill for 1–2 minutes at the end, watching carefully so the cheese doesn’t burn.
- Rest: Let them stand for 5 minutes before serving.
