Ingredients
For the Dough
- 3 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 packet (2 ¼ tsp) active dry yeast
- ½ cup warm milk (110°F/45°C)
- ¼ cup granulated sugar
- 2 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
- 1 egg
- ½ tsp salt
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
For Frying
- Vegetable oil (for deep frying)
For Coating
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 tsp ground cinnamon (optional)
Instructions
Step 1: Prepare the Dough
- In a bowl, mix warm milk and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
- Add sugar, melted butter, egg, vanilla, and salt. Stir until combined.
- Gradually add flour and mix until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 8 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-1.5 hours until doubled in size.
Step 2: Shape the Donuts
- Roll out the dough to about ½ inch thickness.
- Use a round cutter or a glass to cut out circles.
- Use a smaller cutter (or bottle cap) to cut holes in the center.
- Place the shaped donuts on a floured tray and let them rest for 15 minutes.
Step 3: Fry the Donuts
- Heat oil in a deep pan to 350°F (175°C).
- Fry donuts in batches for 1-2 minutes per side until golden brown.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels to drain excess oil.
Step 4: Coat the Donuts
- While still warm, roll the donuts in granulated sugar or a cinnamon-sugar mixture.
- Serve immediately for the best texture and taste.
Formation of the Donut
The dough rises due to the yeast, creating air pockets that make the donuts fluffy. The frying process gives the donuts a crisp outer layer while keeping the inside soft. Coating them in sugar adds an extra layer of sweetness and texture.
