crocheted Christmas-tree hanging ornaments

What you’ll need

• Green, red, or cream chunky/bulky yarn
• Crochet hook around 5–6 mm (adjust to your yarn)
• Small wooden bead, ~20–25 mm
• Embroidery needle
• Matching thread/yarn
• Small gold/pearl beads or star charms for decoration
• Cardboard or a tassel maker for the bottom
• Scissors

Basic construction

The tree is essentially made from 3–4 crocheted tiers, each one becoming progressively wider toward the bottom.

A simple way to make one:

1. Make the hanging loop

• Cut a length of yarn and thread it through the wooden bead.
• Tie a loop at the top, leaving the ends coming down through the bead.
• The bead will sit above the crocheted tree.

2. Crochet the tree tiers

For each tier, crochet in rounds using half-double crochet (HDC) or double crochet (DC).

For example, you can start each tier with a magic ring and increase gradually:

Round 1: 6 stitches
Round 2: 12 stitches
Round 3: 18 stitches
Round 4: 24 stitches
Round 5: 30 stitches

To get the ruffled/flared edge seen in your picture, add extra stitches around the outer edge

* 2 stitches in each stitch around

You don’t need to make every tier a complete circle—the important thing is creating a shallow cone/ruffle.

3. Make 3 or 4 tiers

Make them different sizes:

•  Top: small
•  Middle: medium
• Bottom: large

Stack them so the upper edge of each tier overlaps the one underneath. Sew the centers together so they stay in place.

 Add the decorations

Once the tree is assembled:

• Sew tiny gold stars onto the green tree.
• Add small pearl/gold beads between them.
• For the red and cream versions, use contrasting or matching beads.
• You can also embroider tiny French knots as ornaments.

Make the bottom tassel

Cut about 20–30 strands of yarn, roughly 20–25 cm long.

1. Fold them in half.
2. Tie them securely to the bottom center of the tree.
3. Wrap yarn around the bundle near the top.
4. Trim the ends evenly.

That gives you the long tassel shown in the photo.

I’d make the finished tree approximately 20–25 cm tall, with the tiers roughly:
