Ingredients
For the Doughnuts:
-
2 ¼ teaspoons active dry yeast (1 packet)
-
¾ cup warm milk (110°F/43°C)
-
¼ cup granulated sugar
-
2 ½ cups all-purpose flour (plus extra for dusting)
-
¼ teaspoon salt
-
¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
-
1 large egg
-
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
-
Oil, for frying (vegetable or canola)
For the Glaze:
-
2 cups powdered sugar
-
¼ cup whole milk
-
½ teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
1. Prepare the Dough
-
In a bowl, dissolve yeast in warm milk with 1 teaspoon sugar. Let sit 5–10 minutes until foamy.
-
Add remaining sugar, flour, salt, butter, egg, and vanilla. Mix until a soft dough forms.
-
Knead dough 5–6 minutes until smooth and elastic (by hand or mixer).
2. First Rise
-
Place dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let rise in a warm place for 1–1 ½ hours, or until doubled in size.
3. Shape the Doughnuts
-
Roll dough to ½-inch thickness on a floured surface.
-
Cut out rounds using a doughnut cutter (or 3-inch round cutter + small cutter for holes).
-
Place on parchment-lined trays, cover lightly, and let rise 30–45 minutes until puffy.
4. Fry the Doughnuts
-
Heat oil to 350°F (175°C) in a deep pot.
-
Fry doughnuts 1–2 minutes per side until golden brown.
-
Remove and drain on a wire rack lined with paper towels.
5. Make the Glaze
-
Whisk powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla until smooth. Dip warm doughnuts into glaze, then let set on a rack.
Tips for Perfect Krispy Kreme Doughnuts
-
Temperature is key: Warm milk activates yeast; hot oil fries evenly.
-
Don’t overproof: Too long rising makes doughnuts collapse when frying.
-
Glaze while warm: Ensures that iconic glossy finish.
