Grandma’s Timeless Peach Cobbler

Nothing says comfort quite like a warm, bubbling peach cobbler fresh from the oven. This recipe has been passed down through generations in my family and continues to be a favorite at holidays, Sunday dinners, and potlucks. The peaches are juicy and spiced just right, and the golden topping is soft on the inside with a slight crisp on the edges. Best of all, it’s incredibly easy to make with simple ingredients you probably already have.

Ingredients

For the Peach Filling:

  • 6–8 fresh peaches, peeled and sliced
(or use 4 cups of canned peaches, well-drained)

  • ¾ cup granulated sugar

  • ¼ cup light brown sugar

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg (optional, but adds warmth)

  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice

  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch (to thicken the juices)

For the Cobbler Topping:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 cup granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

  • ¼ teaspoon salt

  • ½ cup unsalted butter, melted

  • ¾ cup whole milk

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Optional for Serving:

  • Vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream

Instructions

1. Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish or a deep 9-inch square dish.

2. Make the Peach Filling

In a large bowl, combine the sliced peaches, granulated sugar, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and cornstarch. Mix gently until the peaches are evenly coated.

If you’re using canned peaches, make sure to drain them well to avoid excess liquid.

Pour the peach mixture into your prepared baking dish and spread it evenly.

3. Prepare the Topping

In another bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Add the melted butter, milk, and vanilla extract, and stir just until the batter is smooth. Be careful not to overmix.

Pour the batter evenly over the peaches. Don’t worry if it doesn’t completely cover the fruit — it will spread and rise beautifully in the oven.

4. Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 40–45 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. The filling should be bubbly around the edges.

5. Cool Slightly & Serve

Let the cobbler rest for about 10 minutes before serving. This gives the filling time to thicken up slightly.

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for the ultimate cozy dessert.

💡 Tips & Variations

  • Make it ahead: You can prep the filling in advance and store it in the fridge for up to 24 hours. Add the topping just before baking.

  • Try it with other fruits: Swap peaches with apples, berries, or nectarines for a seasonal twist.

  • Want extra crisp? Sprinkle a little sugar on top of the batter before baking for a sweet crunch.
